It Is For God We serve the Poor, Not For Thanks.

The title is a quote from Catherine McAuley. As I reflect upon it this morning, it reminds me of another quote attributed to mother Teresa. In that quote the line "do it anyway" comes up almost as a litany.
For instance, if someone treats you poorly, treat them nicely. Do it anyway.

The poor today are not only those with no material goods in their life, they are also those who are burdened with addictions, with loss of hope, with lack of ability to speak the dominant language. We serve the poor in so many instances. Sometimes to the casual eye it seems that there is no evidence of poverty. Just like a hidden handicap that allow a person to use a handicap sticker to park close to a business, poverty can be hidden as well.

Today. take a second look around you. What is the obvious poverty and what is not so obvious? Then remember, it is for God that we serve the poor not for thanks.
